Sitting on the edge of the Lake District is the historic market and festival town of Ulverston. The birthplace of Stan Laurel, one half of the world-famous Laurel and Hardy comedy duo, this vibrant town has history, art, and comedy written into its very foundations.
Arthur Stanley Jefferson was born on the 16th of June 1890 in his Grandparents’ house, on a small terrace called Foundry Cottages. Now known as Argyll Street, the house is privately owned, but the plaque on the outside wall is a popular stop for tourists and fans alike.
Ulverston’s link to its most famous son was discovered by local historian and museum curator Bill Cubin. Bill’s love for Laurel and Hardy led to the opening of The World Famous Laurel and Hardy Museum, which now shares a home with a 1930s cinema in The Roxy. Proudly hosting one of the largest collections of Laurel and Hardy props and memorabilia in the world, the museum welcomes thousands each year.
After your visit, pop over the road and have your photo taken with Ulverston’s famous statue of Stan, Ollie, and Laughing Gravy.
A beloved figure in Ulverston’s history, Stan’s importance to the town is celebrated once a year with the free comedy street festival Another Fine Fest. Hosting some of the most exciting names in comedy, the festival continues to embrace the joy and laughter that was Stan’s calling card.
